This Chinese character originally meant “pregnant”; it pictured a human figure with prominent belly and one leg thrust forward to support and balance the body. The modern form: 身 also means “the human body” — either male or female, ordinary or outstanding. The picture shows a couple of outstanding ones — outstanding in “body”, not in form or figure.
