
The Chinese characters 止 meaning is halt, stop.
Although this Chinese character is a crude representation of the motionless foot, with the five toes reduced to three, it does not stand for “foot”. Its meanings are derived by extension and include: to halt, stop or stand still. The illustration shows how, in an emergency, the foot can come in handy to express the idea of “Stop!”
