To justify taxation, man coined 税 from 禾 (grain) and 兑 (exchange). Evidently farmers paid their taxes in grain (禾) in “exchange” (兑) for services and privileges. The proverb, however, has the last word: “Those who are prospering do not argue about taxes.” They just close their eyes, shut their mouths and pay through the nose.
